2004年曾有过一次遍布三大洋的海啸，起源很明确在印度洋，但这次有点奇怪。 根据监测数据，科学家最初怀疑这次海啸与南大西洋南桑威奇群岛附近的一次7.5级地震有关，但这次地震的震源深度达47千米，理论上不可能引发海啸。 在对地震波数据进行深入处理和分析后，科学家发现， 这次地震其实是由5次连续发生的地震组成的，每次只有相隔几分钟，其中第3次达到了8.2级，而且震源深度仅15千米，足以引发海啸。 但是，这次地震却被监测系统忽略了。 原因是它兼具两种海底地震的特点。 一种是板块突然断裂引起的，震源较深，能量释放是瞬间的，形成的地震波较为短促。 另一种则是两个板块缓慢滑动引发的，震源较浅，能量在较长时间内缓慢释放出来。 这个关键的第3次地震持续了大约200秒，释放了这次地震能量总和的70%，正是它掀起了这次波及三大洋的海啸。 只不过它产生的地震波周期较长，不在现有预警系统探测范围内，所以只看到了7.5级这个明显偏低的测定结果，而且没有海啸警报。
